Chapter 8
It was the darkest dark Lily had ever seen. There was no light coming from anywhere, and for several seconds, she felt entirely alone. She reached out and found Artâs knee.
âItâs okay, Torie,â Art said and put his hand over Lilyâs.
âItâs me!â Lily said.
Just then Angel let out a whimper.
âHey, Angel,â Joe said. âLetâs pretend weâre hiding. Thatâll be cool.â
âWho needs to hide?â Art said. âYou could be an escaped felon in here.â
âThank you,â Torie said. âThat just put an image in my head I could do without.â
Lily was amazed at how calm Torie sounded. Her own heart was racing, and beyond the bleachers, she could hear people shouting in worried voices. A couple of kids were crying.
âListen to those little babies, Angel,â Joe said. âThey donât know how to be big like you.â
Neither do I, Lily thought. This is freaking me out!
âOkay, the jokeâs over,â Torie said. âLetâs get those lights on.â
âWhat do you want to bet the storm knocked out the electricity,â Art said.
âWonderful,â Torie said. âBeing stuck here wasnât enough. Now we have to be stuckâin the dark!â
Just then something groaned as if it were just waking up, and a dim light filtered between the benches above them. There was a weak cheer from the other part of the gym.
âAll the way on would be nice,â Art said. âCome on, you can do it.â
âThatâs the generator,â Torie said. âIt only gives you enough light to see by.â
âWhat about to cook by?â Joe said. âMan, Iâm starving.â
For the first time all day, Lily wasnât thinking about food. She scrambled to her feet and headed for Camp Robbins. Torie was rightâthere was barely enough light to see byâbut she could make out Mom and Dadâs shapes, and she was headed right for them.
âTaylor says the stormâs knocked out the power lines,â Dad was saying when she got thereâwith the rest of them on her heels. Torie was carrying the Barbie Monopoly game. Angel was riding on Joeâs shoulders.
âThis just keeps getting better and better, doesnât it?â Mom shook her head, bouncing her ponytail.
âI like datâdat mine!â Angel said and made a lunge for Momâs hair.
Joe was barely able to hang onto her.
âWhoâs this little person?â Mom said.
âThis is Angel,â Joe said. âCool name, huh?â
âOopsâwe have birthday candles coming out of our nose,â Mom said. She pulled a Kleenex out of her sweats pocket and dabbed at Angelâs nose. Angel didnât seem to notice; she was too fascinated by the ponytail.
âGet out your survival book, Hiker Adventure Barbie,â Art said to Lily. âSee if you can get us out of this one.â
Lily could feel her shoulders sagging. She couldnât win.
âWhat survival book?â Torie said.
âNever mind,â Lily said. âIt wouldnât do us any good. I need a whole different book.â
âMaybe you ought to try the one I brought,â Dad said.
âWe each had to bring one book,â Art said to Torie.
âAnd only one,â Joe put in.
Lily looked at her father. âYou brought a survival book too?â
âI did,â Dad said. âIt tells you how to survive in any situation.
